Saint Croix Island International Historic Site marks the island in the St. Croix River where Pierre Dugua and Samuel de Champlain’s French expedition spent the winter of 1604–05, one of the first European settlement attempts in northern North America. The site, shared with Parks Canada, has a mainland interpretive trail overlooking the island.
