Black History Gallery — McComb, Mississippi
Founded in 2001 by longtime educator and community historian Mrs. Hilda L. Casin, the Black History Gallery is a nonprofit cultural and educational institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and sharing Black history, heritage, and culture. Located in the historic Burglund District of McComb, Mississippi, the Gallery connects local history to its national significance through exhibitions, storytelling, educational programming, and community engagement.
Visitors experience a journey through African and African American history, from the African diaspora, enslavement, emancipation, and the Great Migration to the Civil Rights Movement, Black arts, and contemporary cultural achievements. Special emphasis is placed on Southwest Mississippi’s significant contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, including the courage of local activists, students, and ordinary citizens who challenged segregation and helped shape American history.
Beyond its exhibitions, the Gallery serves as an active community cultural space, offering living history experiences, oral history initiatives, youth educational programs, creative arts activities, community conversations, and historic preservation advocacy. Its Community Curator initiative encourages residents of all ages to participate in preserving and interpreting their own history, ensuring that community voices remain central to the stories being told.
The Gallery also supports efforts to preserve endangered African American historic places, promote cultural tourism, and connect history with creative placemaking and neighborhood revitalization. Through partnerships with educators, artists, preservation organizations, civic groups, and community members, it demonstrates how small cultural institutions can create meaningful local and regional impact.
In 2026, the Gallery celebrated its 25th anniversary and received recognition from the Mississippi Humanities Council and Mississippi Heritage Trust for its contributions to public history and historic preservation.
The Black History Gallery welcomes visitors, educators, researchers, families, and travelers interested in discovering the people, places, and experiences that shaped Black history in Mississippi and beyond.
