In more than 200 photographs, American Photography explores the rich and wide-ranging history of photography in the United States – from everyday personal moments to turning points in history. It also reveals the ways in which photography has permeated every aspect of our lives – including art, news, advertising and the private domain – since its invention in the 19th century. Alongside photographs by major names like Sally Mann, Irving Penn, Robert Frank, Lisette Model, Nan Goldin, James Van Der Zee, Andres Serrano and Bruce Davidson, the exhibition includes many eye-opening images by unknown and anonymous photographers.
